DAY TWO

...here's Angus on day 2 with many late nights of rug hooking to go! as is most often the case I'm working from a photo. This one was taken on a visit to Rock Port New Brunswick along a very remote shoreline. The picture is beautiful and just fine as it is - a photo. When I first drew the rug I felt there was something missing but couldn't quite put my finger on it. Then it occurred to me that I was simply recreating a lovely photo, while the beauty of rug hooking is in the story telling. On my last day of drawing I added (in the midst of this very majestic scene) the large blue bowl with a yellow center, that is key to our Angus. In the bowl lays a grinning yet sacrificial smelt.. and therein lies the story of this rug.
Angus has endured three surgeries, 3 weeks of hospitalization, 6 months and counting of recovery time as well as a complete dietary revamp (as an aside, due to allergies). In all of this Angus remains ever optimistic, fun loving and happy-go-lucky. Rather than dwelling, his enviable dog psyche has taken hold of all that is good such as 24 hour attention, massage therapy, carrot sticks (he's not allowed to have regular biscuits anymore, no corn, wheat, flour, strictly fish, potato, veggies) and most of all smelts! Yes, a smelt snack is enough to fill his heart with a joy that we can only aspire to. That's Angus.... that's his story.

HOOKING "HIMSELF"

I am really exited to be hooking a new rug. Guess who? I finished the drawing and started to hook yesterday. It's a really large piece about 31/2 feet x 6 feet. I'm hooking on linen again and finding it much easier to deal with than burlap. ...will post the whole canvas when I take it off the frame.

THE ANGUS EQUATION

...yet another note to say that Angus is doing very well. His spirits are great and he's not only back on his feet but becoming rather quick on his feet. Here are some mitts recently completed using "The Angus Equation" (couldn't that be the title of a great new thriller novel?) ; on carder splash hair 'o Angus , Lolly locks (lovingly saved from her not -so-grey days) and a dash of silk, (befitting of course), spin to a lofty 4 or 5 wpi, knit two lovely Angus inspired mittens, warm and Newfoundlandish. And finally, gift said mitts to someone special, in this case the incredible surgeon who is responsible for rebuilding our boy Angus - Thank you!
